Standard Motor Products, Inc. (NYSE: SMP) is a leading manufacturer and distributor of premium automotive parts to both the aftermarket and original equipment customers. In the aftermarket, SMP’s products are used in the maintenance, service and repair of vehicles, and are largely non-discretionary in nature. In its non-aftermarket business, the company is a supplier of custom-engineered products for on-highway (commercial and light vehicles) and off-highway (construction and agriculture, and all other) applications. The company is organized into three operating segments. Vehicle Control and Temperature Control segments solely reflect parts sales to aftermarket channels while Engineered Solutions supplies custom-designed solutions to vehicle and equipment manufacturers in non-aftermarket end markets.
Our Vehicle Control Division manufactures and distributes a full line of critical components across three subcategories: Ignition, Emissions & Fuel which includes internal combustion engine (ICE) related categories; Wire Sets & Other that features spark plug wire sets and other related products; Electrical & Safety, which covers powertrain-neutral vehicle technologies such as electrical switches and relays, safety-related products such as anti-lock brake and vehicle speed sensors, tire pressure monitoring sensors, park assist sensors, and other advanced driver assistance components.
Our Temperature Control Division benefits from the broader adoption of more complex AC systems and offers products across two subcategories: AC System Components, which includes compressors, connecting lines, heat exchangers and expansion devices; and Other Thermal Components, comprised of parts that provide engine, transmission, electric drive motor, and battery temperature management.
SMP® Engineered Solutions focuses on custom-engineered solutions to diverse global end markets such as commercial vehicles, construction and agricultural equipment, power sports, hydraulics and industrial, and others. Our offerings feature product categories from both of our legacy operating segments and provide a broad array of conventional and future-oriented technologies, including those that are specific to vehicle electrification and those that are powertrain-neutral.
In the traditional aftermarket channel, we sell our products to program distribution groups, warehouse distributors and major retailers. Our customers buy directly from us and distribute to their own outlets, jobber stores, professional shops and technicians, and “do-it-yourselfers” who perform automotive repairs on their personal vehicles. For the Engineered Solutions end-markets, we sell our products to manufacturers of vehicles and equipment, as well as their tier suppliers and system integrators. We also sell and support the service part divisions of each of our customers.
We currently employ approximately 6,100 people, with 2,400 in the United States and the balance throughout our facilities in Mexico, Canada, Poland, Germany, Hungary, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
